Becomes the title of the file.
What the project does, in one sentence. It goes right under the title.
Languages, frameworks and main tools, with versions when they matter. One item per line.
Commands

Rules

Each list becomes its own section. Leave a list empty to skip it.

One rule per line.
One line per directory or module.
What the agent should do on every task.
What the agent must ask you about before doing it.
Hard limits the agent must not cross.
How to write commit messages and pull requests.
Files to generate

AGENTS.md is the main file and is always generated. According to the matrix, Cursor, Codex and GitHub Copilot read it, and Claude Code reads it under the conditions given in the matrix. Add the files below only for tools that need their own.

Optional extra files:

CLAUDE.md content
Leave empty for none. Example: src/**/*.ts With globs, Cursor attaches the rule when a matching file is in context. Without globs, the rule always applies.
Used for the path-specific file. Default: **

Output

  1. Save AGENTS.md at the root of your repository and commit it.
  2. Save each extra file at the path shown in its title, relative to the repository root.
  3. Start a new agent session. The matrix shows which tool reads which file.

Which tool reads which file is in the matrix. Check it before you rely on a file.
